For years, I struggled with symptoms that didn’t seem to have a clear cause— I chalked it up to being in nursing school, working overtime, and other life stressors. I had fatigue that never went away, unexplained weight gain, dry skin, brittle nails, and sluggishness that made everyday tasks feel overwhelming. I knew something wasn’t right, but it wasn’t until I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism that everything finally started to make sense.
Understanding Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones, which are crucial for regulating metabolism, energy, and overall bodily functions. When these levels are low, it can feel like my body is running on empty no matter how much I sleep or try to take care of myself.
The Role of Thyroid Medication
I started a nursing role at Wellness District and I had all my labs drawn during training. My labs came back, and I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. My provider quickly prescribed thyroid medication, Armour Thyroid, to help supplement the hormones that my body wasn’t making enough of. At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Would I need to adjust my dosage multiple times? Would I have side effects? It took some time to find the right dosage—too little, and my symptoms would creep back in; too much, and I’d feel jittery or anxious. The journey was not immediate, but over time, I started noticing changes.
The sluggishness lifted, my energy improved, and I no longer felt like I was dragging myself through each day. With regular blood work and my provider’s guidance, I found a balance that worked for me.
Managing Life with Hypothyroidism
Taking thyroid medication is just one piece of the puzzle. I’ve also learned that lifestyle choices play a big role in how I feel. Getting enough sleep, managing stress, and eating a balanced diet all contribute to my well-being. Some days are better than others, but overall, I feel more in control of my health.
For anyone newly diagnosed with hypothyroidism, I want to say: be patient with yourself. Finding the right treatment takes time, and listening to your body is key. With the right medication and self-care, it is possible to feel like yourself again.
